Every golfer of every level is always looking for putting tips. You can never make enough putts. And, every golfer knows how important putting is to your score. But how much time do golfers put into their short game versus bombing drivers on the range? If you are like the average golfer, you probably spend a lot more time hitting balls then you do practicing 6 footers – which leads to tip number one!
1. Practice! There is no “magic bullet” in golf. Yes, there are some concepts and thoughts that can make a big difference but only if you are willing to apply them through practice. You don’t have to stand on the putting green for hours. If you’re willing to put in 15 minutes before and after your rounds, you will see great improvement in your putting.
2. Take it easy! Have you ever seen a great putter look tense? Even the great competitors like Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson get supple as they approach their putts. Sometimes you’ll even see a tour professional shake his arm loose. They get it – tension kills feel! So relax and roll it.
3. Every putt is straight. This is a concept from the great short game guru, Dave Pelz. Dave explains that as long as you can determine what direction the putt should start out in, you can treat it like a straight putt. If you’ve played golf on a video game, you know exactly what he is talking about. A great way to do this is with a chalk line. Snap a line straight from your ball to the hole. Then snap a line down the line in which the putt starts out. Square up and putt down the second line. You will not believe how many putts you will make!
